Gi-Fi-The next generation wireless technology

There are many wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, etc. These technologies have the ability to transfer data at the rate of mega bytes(MB).For transferring larger amount of data, we need an advanced technology. The Scientists of University of Melbourne have invented a new technology called 'Gi-Fi'.Gi-Fi means Giga bit wireless or Giga bit fidelity.

Gi-Fi is the first transceiver integrated on a single chip. This operates at 60 Hz.The chip is manufactured using CMOS(Complementary Metal oxide Semiconductor) process. This allows the transfer of files such as audio, video at the rate of 5 Giga bits per second. The range of this technology is 10 meters. It utilizes a 5 mm square chip and a 1 mm wide antenna burning less than 2 watts of power to transmit data wirelessly over short distances, much like Bluetooth.

The size of the chip is 5*5 mm.The rate of this chip is $10.The reason for pushing into Gi-Fi technology is because of slow rate, high power consumption, low range of frequency operations of earlier technologies i.e. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Features of Gi-Fi are :

  •  High speed data transfer
  •  Cost-effective
  •  High security
  •  Low power consumption
  •  Portable

The amount of data transfer is 5 giga bits per second. This is ten times faster than the current technologies. As the integrated transceiver is extremely small, it can be embedded into devices. The breakthrough will mean the networking of office and home equipment without wires will finally become a reality. The Gi-Fi integrated transceiver chip may be launched by the starting of next year by NICTA. The cost of the chip is very low and hence of the companies have come forward to sell the chips.Companies such as Toshiba, intel, LG, Panasonic, Sony and Samsung are interested to sell these chips.

This technology can be used in many applications such as office applications, household applications, in tablets, notebooks and personal computers. Broadcasting can be improves using this technology.
