Acid rain, Ozone depletion led to mass extinction during the Permian period

A new study has revealed a truth that acid rain and ozone depletion has led to the extinction of 90 percent of marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial species. At the end of Permian period, there was a mass extinction and it was so wild. This remains as a largest extinction in the Earth's history.Permian period is the period of Paleozoic Era.

In Siberia, there were volcanic eruptions, it is believed that these volcanic eruptions has led to this disaster. This was found by the team of researchers including the Director of Carnegie Institution's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism Linda Elkins -Tanton.

This has led to extinction of marine species and terrestrial species. After this the dinosaurs dominated the environment. The volcanic eruptions created sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide. This led to acid rain and finally to the extinction of the species. The release of methyl chloride led to global ozone collapse.

The researchers concluded that the Permian period was affected due to the changes in pH and ultraviolet radiation and the emission of green house gases as a result of high temperature.
